For parents and teachers: what this covers

Each topic follows the Key Stage 3 maths programme of study for England, set by year group: Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9. The methods are the ones used in "maths mastery" classrooms, which grew out of the England–Shanghai teacher exchange.

  • 正负数 Negative Numbers: adding and subtracting on a number line, then multiplying and dividing, then order of operations (BIDMAS) with negatives.
  • 短除法 Factors and Primes: primes and HCF, then the Chinese short-division "ladder" for HCF and LCM, then prime factorisation in index form.
  • 乘方 Powers and Standard Form: squares, cubes and roots, then the index laws, then standard form for very large and very small numbers.
  • 比例 Ratio and Percentages: simplifying and sharing ratios, then percentage change with multipliers, then reverse percentages and compound interest.
  • 方程 Solving Equations: two-step equations, unknowns on both sides, then brackets and negative answers. Each one is shown as a balance, and the worked steps appear after.
  • 代数 Expressions: substitution and collecting like terms, expanding single brackets, then expanding double brackets and factorising quadratics.
  • 数列 Sequences: term-to-term rules, then the nth term, then using the nth term and simple quadratic sequences.
  • 勾股定理 Angles, Area and Pythagoras: angle facts, then areas of triangles, trapeziums and circles, then Pythagoras' theorem, known in China as the gōu gǔ theorem and recorded there over 2,000 years ago.

Not covered yet: probability, statistics, graphs and transformations. Every question has a Show the method button that explains how to solve it, and it opens by itself after two wrong tries. Using it costs nothing. XP is saved on this device only: 10 XP for a first-try answer, 5 XP after a wrong one.
